EVERYTHING IS BETTER
ON A RAFT!
In 1976, ninety-five members and friends of the Dayton Gay Volleyball club started an annual whitewater rafting trip on the New River in Fayetteville, WV. Traditionally, the trip takes place on the 2nd or 3rd weekend in July. Even though the group started in Dayton, OH, we have always welcomed others to join us on the trip and typically have several states represented.
Jeffrey Hilvers began whitewater rafting in 2001 for the annual July trip with RainbowRafters. He took over as the trip organizer from Bob Lyons, one of the original Gryphons, who started rafting on the New River in 1976. Beginning in 2015, Rainbowrafters started white water rafting on the Gauley River each September. "I have been involved as a firefighter since 1987 and EMT-paramedic since 1998. West Virginia has always felt like a second home to me, the beauty of the state and its people are always refreshing. I look forward to the river trips every year. Making new friends every time. you can spice this up a little if you'd like to."
